History and Founding of Chevron Corporation
Chevron’s origins trace back to 1879, when it was established as Pacific Coast Oil Company in California. In 1900, it was acquired by Standard Oil Company, becoming a key subsidiary on the West Coast.
Following the dissolution of Standard Oil in 1911 due to antitrust rulings, the company became known as Standard Oil of California (SOCAL).
It later expanded significantly, especially after the acquisition of Gulf Oil Corporation in 1984, one of the largest mergers in corporate history at the time.
In 2001, Chevron merged with Texaco, forming ChevronTexaco, and adopted its current name, Chevron Corporation, in 2005.
Over the decades, Chevron has evolved from a traditional oil company to an energy player investing in renewable energy, carbon reduction, and emerging technologies. In the 2010s, it expanded activities in Brazil's pre-salt reserves and in U.S. shale gas development.
Between 2020 and 2024, the company accelerated its energy transition strategy, increasing investments in clean energy projects and committing to net-zero emissions by 2050.
It also pursued strategic acquisitions to strengthen its position in the sustainable energy sector.
Today, headquartered in San Ramon, California, Chevron remains one of the world’s leading energy companies, balancing its traditional fossil fuel operations with a growing focus on low-carbon solutions.
