History and founding of Toyota Motor Corporation
The story of Toyota Motor Corporation began in 1933 in Japan, when Kiichiro Toyoda, then working in the textile industry, visited the United States and was inspired by vehicles produced by companies such as Ford and Chevrolet.
Motivated by the advancement of the American automotive industry, he decided to establish an automotive division within the Toyota Industries Corporation, which originally manufactured automatic looms.
To enable automobile production, Kiichiro sent director Risaburo Oshima to the U.S. and Europe in June 1933 to acquire machine tools. At the same time, Kiichiro studied car designs and decided to base Toyota’s early models on parts compatible with the most common vehicles in Japan, such as Ford and Chevrolet.
In October 1933, Kiichiro disassembled a 1933 Chevrolet, analyzed its components, and began designing Toyota's first engine. In the following year, he purchased additional reference vehicles to aid in designing the company's first prototype.
By 1934, Toyota had completed construction of a prototype factory and a steel mill, both essential for manufacturing its first automobiles. The company unveiled its first passenger vehicle prototype, the Model A1, in 1935.
Following this development, Toyota Motors began mass production, established a sales department, and expanded its reach in the Japanese market.
As sales increased, Toyota solidified its position as one of the world’s leading car manufacturers, with strong performance in North America, Europe, and Asia.
Over the decades, Toyota has reached several important milestones. Between 2020 and 2024, the company continued to expand its operations, invest in new technologies, and grow its presence in both the automotive and financial services sectors.
