History and Development
MetLife traces its origins to 1868, when it was founded in the United States as the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company. The business initially focused on providing insurance coverage for soldiers and workers during the post–Civil War period.
Soon after its creation, the company reorganized and adopted the name Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, shifting its focus to individual life insurance. Over time, MetLife expanded its product offerings and became one of the largest life insurers in the United States.
During the late twentieth century, the company broadened its international operations and diversified its financial services. In 2000, MetLife completed a major demutualization and became a publicly traded company, significantly expanding its access to capital markets.
In recent years, MetLife has focused on strengthening its retirement, asset management, and corporate benefits businesses while investing in digital platforms, data analytics, and technology designed to improve customer experience and operational efficiency.
